United States of America – Overview:
The United States of America occupies a large expanse of land on the North American continent, stretching from the Atlantic Ocean in the east to the Pacific Ocean in the west, and is bordered by Canada to the north and Mexico to the south. It also includes the island chain of Hawaii, which lies in the Pacific Ocean halfway between America and the Asian continent, and the state of Alaska, located to the northwest of Canada between the Artic and Pacific Oceans.
The country has a population of well over 290 million people and is comprised of 50 states, each with its own constitution and government, which are joined in a federal republic. The capital of the U.S.A, Washington D.C., is situated on the country’s east coast.
The country’s economy is the largest and most diverse in the world, with a GDP in excess of $10 trillion, and is generally characterised by steady growth, low unemployment, low inflation, and rapid advances in technology. Businesses in the USA are subject to far less government regulation than those operating in Western Europe and Japan.
The country benefits from vast mineral and agricultural resources and has the largest coal reserves, 6th largest gas reserves and 11th largest oil reserves in the world.
Major trading partners with the USA include Canada, Germany, Japan, Mexico, South Korea and the United Kingdom.
