St Kitts & Nevis – Overview:
The Federation of Saint Kitts & Nevis is situated in the Eastern Caribbean, toward the northern end of the Leeward Islands group, and is comprised of Saint Kitts, Nevis, and the tiny island of Sombrero. St. Kitts is the larger of the two main islands and home to the capital Basseterre. The principal town on Nevis is Charlestown.
The islands first became a self governing state, in association with Great Britain, together with Anguilla in 1967. However, Anguilla withdrew from this union shortly after it was established and, in 1980, was officially separated from St. Kitts & Nevis. In 1983, St Kitts & Nevis went on to achieve full independence.
Since the 1970s the islands’ economy has diversified considerably. For much of the islands' history sugar production has been the principal economic activity. However, while it still dominates the agricultural sector, other activities such as offshore banking, tourism and export-oriented manufacture have come to play increasingly significant roles in recent years and the Government is committed to furthering such diversification. As part of this process the Economic Affairs Division has been established in order to promote industrial development and investment.
The Robert L. Bradshaw International Airport, on St. Kitts, is home to numerous airlines, which together offer scheduled flights to and from destinations throughout Europe and North America. Flights from London and other destinations in Europe take approximately 8-9 hours, while flights from New York take about 4-5 hours.
