The Sultanate of Brunei Darussalam is located on the northern shores of the Island of Borneo and is bordered by Malaysia and the South China Sea. According to Brunei Tourism, in 2007 the population stood at 390,000.

For almost a century Brunei was a British Protectorate until 1984 when it gained independence, however despite gaining independence Brunei still has strong link to the United Kingdom and is a member of The Commonwealth of Nations.

Brunei’s capital Bandar Seri Begawan is to be found to the north of the country close to the South China Sea, apart from being the countries administrative centre it is also a manufacturing region.

The CIA World Factbook reports that “Crude oil and natural gas production account for just over half of GDP and more than 90% of exports.” The services and tourism are also sectors important to the countries economy. Over the years Brunei has been looking to and has done much to attract foreign investment, as such Brunei has many tax incentives for investors with the Brunei Economic Development Board (BEDB) stating that exemption has the possibility to continue for up to 20 years.

Whilst the economy of the country is in a relatively prosperous position the country has realised it must push forward changes to continue on its successful path, to that end a number of measures have been initiated. The Wawasan Brunei (Brunei Darussalam’s National Vision) 2035 began in 2008 with the aim of placing Brunei among the worlds top10 economies by 2035. Wawasan Brunei focus’s on, amongst other things education, quality of life and a sustainable economy.

By the standards of most countries Brunei is a wealthy state; according to the World Factbook in 2008 it was placed 8th out of 229 countries based on GDP per capita (PPP) at an estimated $53,100.

Currently Brunei International Airport, close to the capital, is serviced by a small number of Far Eastern airlines with direct flights primarily around the Far East; however ongoing improvements are likely to continue until 2031. Brunei’s chief seaport lies around 20 kilometres to the north east of Bandar Seri Begawan.

In the Human Development Report 2007/2008 which was published United Nations Development Programme, Brunei Darussalam was placed in thirtieth position out of 177 countries worldwide. Notably within the report, Brunei Darussalam was the highest placed Islamic state and in the top half of the high human development category.
